Team

I need the following standard "ham band" S line crystals for some
ex-military Collins S line equipment I am restoring:

  6.555 MHz

10.155 MHz

10.355 MHz

8.5775 MHz

8.6775 MHz

8.9775 MHz

12.0775 MHz

12.1775 MHz

12.2775 MHz

I have contacted several vendors and none have the standard Collins crystals
that came with the S Line covering the ham bands in stock. The "usual
vendors" I have contacted have only non standard crystals covering bands
other than those including ham frequencies in stock.

If anyone has any standard S line crystals (e.g. covering the ham bands)
please let me know which ones you are willing to part with and your asking
price plus shipping and handling. I can pay you using PayPal, check, cash or
?

Thanks, Ted, K6XN

Glen, Thank you again for the advice.First I took it the limitation of the limitation of the amp.Of course one should be more careful when the consumption comes higher. The Bird seems to be OK cuz other power meters indicates almost thesame amount of power. So next thing I shoud check is the multimeter. It seems that so far as I use CW position, 1900V is not outrageous reading. If so, 0.4A is the most suspicious.Mac, JE1ATW> Date: Mon, 31 Dec 2007 19:34:48 -0800> From: gzook@yahoo.com> Subject: {Collins} Re: 30S-1 Output Power> To: je1atw@hotmail.com; collins@listserve.com> > Yes, you can transmit a carrier in the SSB position. > However, you will definitely put out more power due to> the higher plate voltage. Greetngs all and happy new year :).

Thanks to you all who have replied to my question- if my 516F-2 can be run off 230vac. The news is -
it can. If it hadn't been for your advice I wouldn't have been able to work it out.

Thanks & take care: Geoff vk3fabv

Ted,

Well known Collins restorers I know use the following source:

www.mhelectronics.com. (800 643 9825)
Give them a call for your specific requirements - they are very helpful.
http://www.mhelectronics.com/

Click the "Request a Quote" link on their page.
Of course, they DO have all the specs for your S-Line needs.

Amp owners,

One of the things we seem to seldom do is check the accuracy of our meters.

- The Valiant has meter shunts made of thin wire that seem to be prone to errors
and can be very hard to locate in the transmitter!

- Our normally dependable, ceramic, finned tetrodes need the correct filament
voltage to live long and happily (6 point ZERO volts, not 6.3), but do we check
the actual voltage at the tube socket pins compared to the meter indications?
In the 30S-1, the Filament Voltage meter system depends on 50 year old 1N34
diodes (though the resistors involved are film types, not carbon composition).

- The HV multiplier resistor in the 30L-1 may be drifted or toasted.

- In the 30S-1, the "plate current" meter is dedicatged to that purpose. The
other currents are metered with some odd and clever circuit arrangements.

It seems to me that we could set up a low voltage supply and current limiter
with an accurate external current meter to check that plate current meter, and
the other current metering functions, too. Careful study of the manual and
schematic will lead to the right points to inject the known currents.

I have found the HP-428B DC clip-on milliammeter to be useful. You just
clip the probe over a wire carrying DC current and you can measure from
about 1 mA up to 10 A. You can use it on bare wire up to about 300 V or
insulated wires with almost unlimited voltage.

They seem to be available on eBay almost all the time. You just need to
make sure it comes with the probe, not much good without the probe.
Separate probes are rarely listed.

COLLINS S-LINE, KWM-2 & 75A-4 & 75A-2 CAP KITS

=20

=20

I have in stock replacement capacitor sets including custom made dual =
and triple electrolytic cans. The capacitor sets are intended to =
replace all electrolytic capacitors and paper capacitors in each model. =
The metal can electrolytics physically and electrically fit in place of =
the original exactly. Each set comes with a list identifying each =
capacitor to be replaced by the Collins part number on the schematic for =
that model. Shipping is $11 anywhere in the country via UPS for one kit =
or as many as four for the same $11 cost. Shipping outside the =
continental United States via US Airmail.=20

Payment can be a bank/postal money order, Paypal or call me with a =
credit card number. =20

=20

Testimonial by Bob Littleton, K4BX, k4bx@comcast.net:

=20

"By the way, I wanted to let you know that last night I completed =
recapping=20
my 75S-3B using your recap kit (and I had done my KWM-2 about a week=20
earlier). What an improvement, particularly in the 75S3-B. I measured =
all=20
the old caps as I removed them, and all were within tolerance, but =
obviously=20
there must have been considerable leakage in some of them. The 75S-3B =
now=20
sounds like a million bucks! Thanks for putting these kits together, =
It=20
really is a nice service for us Collins freaks"

NEW NEW NEW:

Thanks to Rich Hairston who was the guinea pig, we put together a cap =
set for the 30S-1. The caps are packaged in sizes close to the =
originals so they fit into the stock clamps. I have not as yet =
determined the exact price but it should be in the range of $75 plus =
shipping. Includes 5 electrolytics plus the dual can for a total of 6. =
Please let me know if you are interested

Hello, I am looking for a 30S-1, complete, or nearly so, and in =
restorable condition. It would be great if it was in working condition =
and if I could afford it. I live in Flagstaff, Arizona. Hopefully, the =
unit would be within a days drive, one way so I could pick it up.

I have a PRC-47 which functions but has reduced power at bot ends of its =

Somehow I've misplaced my adapter that takes a pl259 on one side and
the other plugs into the rf output on the 30L1. What is the name/number
of the rf output jack on the 30L1 so I can buy another adapter?

A happy new year to the list.
I sent the email below 10 hours ago but it doesn't appear on the list.
So let me send it again.

Haven't checked the multimeter yet because during the new year's daysit's our tradition to stay with the family. Now, please allow me ask you one other query.I'd like to know the multimeter's readings of your 30S-1 on CW position. Please tell me,-PLATE VOLTAGE-PLATE CURRENT -Measured output power (by any power meter ie,312B4, etc) Thanks for the band widthMac, JE1ATW

Dear mambers,Thanks for a lot of advices for my question.Sorry to say I can't respond each of your e-mail.Thank you for your kind help ALAN CHANDLER-san, Roy Morgan-san, Glen Zook-san, Jim Adams-san, Bill Carns-san, Bob Sullivan-san, David Knepper-san, Bill Fikis-san, Harold Hairston-san, Don Cunningham-san. I ran the amp on CW position and use a dummy load thought be good in SWR.So the problem seems to lay on the accuracy of Birds or the multi meter.I will check em later and if I have further question please let me ask again. Now I have another question. Somebody asked me if I measure the power on SSB position. Is it OK to transmit carrier on SSB position? Mac, JE1ATW

From: je1atw@hotmail.comTo: collins@listserve.comSubject: {Collins} 30S-1 Output PowerDate: Mon, 31 Dec 2007 21:40:45 +0900

Season's greetings. I'm really confusing so I need someone's help.I need to measure the output power of 30S-1 to applicate forthe station's licence. I read 800W of output with Birds 43 power meter on say 40m, then, I had following multimeter readings.PLATE VOLTAGE: 1900V.PLATE CURRENT: 0.4A. According to the formula for GG AMP, the output power must be calculated, Output Power = (Input Power * Efficiency) + Drive PowerIn my case, if I apply 60% for the efficiency, Output power = (1900 * 0.4 * 0.6) + 80W = 536WThere is a great difference from the calculation result and Birds' reading.I might miss something. Any advice will be appreciated. Mac, JE1ATW

Season's greetings.

I'm really confusing so I need someone's help.
I need to measure the output power of 30S-1 to applicate for
the station's licence.

I read 800W of output with Birds 43 power meter on say 40m,
then, I had following multimeter readings.
PLATE VOLTAGE: 1900V.
PLATE CURRENT: 0.4A.

According to the formula for GG AMP, the output power must be calculated,
Output Power = (Input Power * Efficiency) + Drive Power
In my case, if I apply 60% for the efficiency,
     Output power = (1900 * 0.4 * 0.6) + 80W = 536W
There is a great difference from the calculation result and Birds' reading.
I might miss something. Any advice will be appreciated.

Mac, JE1ATW

Hi, all and Happy New Year.
I have just bought a 30L-1 and in the section 1 of the manual on installations for equipment
furnished it calls for a RG-58/U cable 20.5 ft long but someone inked in that it should be 4 ft. I am new with collins and am trying to get on the air with a 75S-3B , 32S-3 , 30L1 and the 312B-4. Any help will be appreceated.

Hi Jerry and welcome. Collins specified the 20.4 ft length to minimize IMD
in the exciter. They later changed the length to the corrected number you
see. It is better to try and keep the cable the right length, but it is a
small effect and if need be, it can be what you need.

The original specification for the input cable for
both the 30S-1 and the 30L-1 was 20.5 feet. However,
Collins later changed to cable length to 4 feet for
the 30L-1. The "recommended" cable for the 30S-1 is
still 20.5 feet.

If you get "desperate" for cables I do have new
interconnect cables available. Go to

http://k9sth.com/Page_3.html

and the cable kits are listed in the 2nd link from the
top.
