When I first got my 30L-1 about 13 years ago I flipped the lid up while
tuning so I could see the 811s and noticed how very sensitive the red glow of
their plates are to proper tuning. You can virtually tune the rig by minimizing
or eliminating the redness. For any who haven't done this, it gives you a
good feel for how careful and quick you should be in the tuning process at
higher power input. The bridge circuit that drives the tuning meter may not always
give the optimum tune setting unless it has recently been adjusted properly.
I always watch the B-4 or B-5 for max. forward power and min. reflected at
the same time.

A local friend of mine fried his rig with from 811 arc over. It took out all
four 47 ohm resistors and a couple of the silver mica caps that ground the
grids for RF. I diagnosed the problem, had the components and fixed it for him.
A Collins engineer ( I forget who now who ) has said the 47 ohm carbon
resistors in the cathodes were designed in primarily as fuses to minimize further
rig damage when 811s fry.

The 30L-1 is still a great PA but definitely not as forgiving as some of the
modern ones.

George, W1BOF

only change from the original. The PTO quit working and I repaired it =
and it
works fine. However the parts from the local parts emporium were not the
tailored parts originally used and the little PTO cover could not be
refitted. The military tags give the following info: R-388/URR; Serial =
No.
231; Phila. 51.

I offer you a truly magnificent receiver for $525.00 which includes a =
manual

Looking for a OFF-ON-NB-CAL rotary phenolic switch for a KWM-2/2A. Shown
as S-11 on the schematic and is Collins part #259-1075-00. New or used
would be fine. Any help will

I am in the process of rehabilitating an SB-620 set up for Collins IF of 455.
I just could not bring myself to use it as a donor unit for another SB-620 I
have hooked up to a Heathkit SB-303.
So, pending arrival of ordered parts for the bench work I thought I would
ask a question.
Where should I tap into my KWM-2 to pick up the signal?
What value of coupling cap should I use?
Will I have to trim the IF of the KWM-2?
Is this worth the trouble???
Thanks in advance.

After many request for sharing of the information on this subject I
contacted Carl, K4ZRD, and he told me to refer you all to him and his web page.
Pictures can't be posted on the CCA list so he will have to send you the
information direct.
You will love his web page.
It has lots of information on the SB-610 and SB-620.
He is the Guru on those units and use with Collins equipment plus he is a
great person to know.
73,
Dan/N4VET

We will try this.
k4zrd.com
Put a (www.) in front of k4drz and a(.com) after.
If I put the thing together for you the list sees it as an attachment and it
won't get through.
Hope you can figure it out fellows.
We may have to find some of the WWII code makers and breakers from Fletchly
to get this through.

Dan/N4VET

Just a heads up regarding the above subject 51S-1 on EBAY. This
particular 51S-1 is not in a 51S-1 cabinet, but a KWM-2/2A cabinet
that has had the back cut out to accommodate a 51S-1. Note the top
lock down fittings as well and a metal finger hole. Also there were
51S-1s made well past 1974. The trim ring may not be scratched, but
it looks badly yellowed to me.The lack of a serial number would lower
the value of the unit.

I know most of the subscribers to this reflector would certainly
recognized these shortcomings, but there may be new subscribers who
may have only recently developed an interest in the Collins gear who
would like to know what to look out for for when considering buying a
51S-1 such as this one. Unfortunately this seller certainly knows it
is not in the correct cabinet and has failed to make full disclosure
and also that the production date is not the "last production of this
model." It is being sold "as is" which means buyer beware. Also he
has a 20% restocking fee if he agrees to take and item back and you
pay the freight back so you eat the freight both ways.

I have a KWM-2 that the RCA plug ,next to the ALC plug, on the top row of
RCA plugs, on the back right row of RCA plugs, is marked EXT MUTE.
>From all the other KWM-2's that I have seen, and from my manual, that RCA
plug should be a spare and marked as such.
I have not looked at it from the inside to see if it is being used or
connected to anything but I am going to need the plug as a spare to connect an
SB-620.
Anyone know anything about that RCA plug being marked as EXT. MUTE instead
of spare?
It seems to be a factory marking.
Do I have a rare bird?
Thanks in advance,
Dan/N4VET

Maybe others have already posted this in the past- but I am relatively new
to the group.

I made up a jumper from my RE KWM-2 to my 312B-5's directional coupler using
RG-318 (formerly RG-188, the teflon/silver version of RG-174). On the
312B-5 end I used an SMA plug, and an adatper to type N.
The RG-318 is so flexible that the KWM-2 can easily be moved around without
stressing the RCA socket or losing contact. Power handling of the 318,
even on 10M is about 3dB above the KWM-2's output.

Yes, I have used a short length of RG-188 to connect my KWM-2A to my 30S-1
(I know, I know, 20.5 ft) so that I can lift it off the top of the 30S-1
when I want in the 30S-1 and it works great.
I also use it on all my standby operating S-Line transmitters for the same
purpose. You have to take it real easy on those RCA connections.

Good heads up Kurt.
In fact if you try to enlarge the rear shot of the cabinet a different
picture comes up. He tried to nail me on a manual once. Bad camera
shot. Said it was original, actually a copy. I fought and won. Bottom
line was he tried to misrepresent a $30. item, watch the big ticket
item.

Just a heads up regarding the above subject 51S-1 on EBAY. This
particular 51S-1 is not in a 51S-1 cabinet, but a KWM-2/2A cabinet that
has had the back cut out to accommodate a 51S-1. Note the top lock down
fittings as well and a metal finger hole.

Subject: {Collins} KWM-2 Question

Thanks in advance,
Dan/N4VET

That receiver is being sold by Radio Mart. Do a
"google" on "Radio Mart" if you are not familar with
Martyn. He is well known for scamming yet eBay allows
him to continue to do business.

I have never bought anything from him. However, a
fellow did buy a KWM-2A from him and have it shipped
directly to me for alignment, etc. The radio was sold
in excellent condition and when it arrived it was
basically a parts unit. There was corrosion all over
the chassis, most of the center insulators on the RCA
jacks were missing, the center pin of the power jack
was missing, there was a piece of perf-metal as the
cover on the PA cage, etc. I have photos of the unit
that I can E-Mail to anyone who is even thinking of
doing business with Martyn.

I have heard of numerous other such tales.

Even with his well-known reputation there are still a
lot of people who keep on doing business with him and
who keep getting scammed.

line was he tried to misrepresent a $30. item, watch

S/N 13797 is out of the case in front of me. That RCA jack is marked SPARE
on this one.

The manual, 4th Edition, 1 April 1964, I randomly pulled from my file
cabinet shows it as SPARE on the schematic as well.

Subject: {Collins} KWM-2 Question

I have a KWM-2 that the RCA plug ,next to the ALC plug, on the top row of
RCA plugs, on the back right row of RCA plugs, is marked EXT MUTE.
>From all the other KWM-2's that I have seen, and from my manual, that RCA
plug should be a spare and marked as such.
I have not looked at it from the inside to see if it is being used or
connected to anything but I am going to need the plug as a spare to connect
an SB-620.
Anyone know anything about that RCA plug being marked as EXT. MUTE instead
of spare?
It seems to be a factory marking.
Do I have a rare bird?
Thanks in advance,
Dan/N4VET
