While helping a fellow ham with his KWS-1 we found a few problems. The
Plate Voltage feed thru capacitor has turned into a 256 ohm resistor - not good!
I may have found a possible substitute at RF Parts. Also the plate "rings"
on the 4CX250's have deteriorated. The silver plated fingers have gotten
extremely brittle and are falling off. Does anyone know of a source for
replacements? In addition, recommendations for a source of the Buss high voltage
fuse would be helpful.

Thanks in advance,

John Felton

John, I have not found a suitable replacement for the HV Plate feed through
cap, but I have replaced several successfully with a standard ceramic feed
through that is the correct size, bypassed with a HV disk ceramic on the
inside. Does not require any destructive holes or mods and works quite well.

Plate rings are a problem. You can buy the beryllium finger stock and have
it brazed onto the old ring and replated. I can provide info re parts if it
comes to this and you can not find replacements. Buss HVB-1s can still be
purchased. Save the old ones. They can be rebuilt if need be. They are not
cheap. Do not be tempted to jump bad ones with a standard size 1 Amp fuse.
They do not have enough space in them and even a blown standard size fuse
has enough vaporized metal in it to support a plasma and they just continue
to conduct until they literally blow up. Some folks have gotten away with
this and it does work sometimes, but the risk to the equipment, and maybe
you, is not worth it.

Another question! The KWS-1 we are working on has a 6X4 as the ALC
rectifier. The documentation I downloaded from the archives shows a 6AL5. Any
suggestions?

Thanks to all again!!

Hi all
I have here a nice 32S-2 which is in excess of my needs. All original so it would need the replacement of caps (electrolytics, green Sangamo etc). Very nice cabinet, original color. As the 32-S2 has twice the crystal positions of the 32S-1 it makes a nice transmitter for the WARC bands. Just beware of CW...

Note that there is no original power supply (original owner built his own - this is available with the raido at the cost of shipping) and there is an original 32S-1 manual to go with it (has the sticker of the then Collins rep in Switzerland). Looking at the date code on one of the electrolytics (nothing on the crystals) it's 1960 vintage. The transmitter has not been tested, I bought it from the 1st or 2nd owner a few years ago. It is located in Zurich/Switzerland.

If someone is interested in the transmitter please contact me off list hb9aik@yahoo.com.

  73 and a nice weekend

Hi all
last month I bought a HF-80 transmitter rack that also included the HF-8090 remote control. The transmitter was demonstrated to me working with the remote control, but in my case it is locally controlled only. Therefore I'm considering selling the complete working remote control to someone who might use it.

This HF-8090 is an early series model and comes complete with original 19" cabinet and original manual. I am the 3rd owner, it is in very nice condition and it has never seen a surplus dealer (origin traceable...). It is located in Zurich/Switzerland.

If someone is interested in this unit please contact me off list hb9aik@yahoo.com.

Best regards and have a nice weekend
  Ulrich hb9aik - vk6bqd

Hi John,

The earlier KWS-1's before SN 1100 as recorded in Bill Carn's Spring 1992
Collins Collectors Quarterly Magazine indicates that the 6X4 was changed to
a 6AL5 as the ALC rectifier. If you can, try and get a copy of an earlier
edition manual and schematic showing the 6X4. You also have adjustable ALC
on the front panel as opposed to fixed ALC on units after about SN 1100.
After SN 1100 the ALC front panel position was used for a Test Key switch.
Some earlier units were factory modified and some were just modified by
resourceful hams.

I agree with Bill's response on the HVB-1. Do not use a 3AG tacked across a
blown HVB-1 as it becomes extremely dangerous. I have found many of the
KWS-1 power supplies I have worked on to contain lots of broken glass, a
sure sign that a glass fuse was used and it exploded!

As Bill also wrote, an excellent inexpensive way to replace C-416, the .01,
2500 volt HV feedthrough bypass is to make a small metal or plastic plate to
house a ceramic feed through fitting and then simply use a .01, 4 KV disk to
ground from the connection inside the PA cage. To do this requires removal
of the rear panel of the HV cage. I have some pictures I can send along that
show how I do it which I will do directly.

Last but not least, do not trust any of the HV bleeders or interlocks! Make
sure you always use a "hot stick" to short the HV caps to ground before
sticking your hands in that supply. There is a bolted connection on the HV
line which joins the bleeders to the HV interlock lead and it sometimes
becomes loose. In any event, never trust any bleeder! Just because a HVB-1
fuse blew does not mean the caps lost all charge. Be safe and not dead!

HVB-1 fuses are still available and generally run about $8 to "whatever".

73, Roger, NJ2R

Another question! The KWS-1 we are working on has a 6X4 as the ALC
rectifier. The documentation I downloaded from the archives shows a 6AL5.
Any
suggestions?

Thanks to all again!!

FIRST WEDNESDAY AM NIGHT!!! Sponsored by the Collins Collectors Association.

Wednesday March 5th,2008 on 3880 kcs at 7:00 PM local East Coast time
marks the start of the latest
chapter of First Wednesday AM Night, drawing hundreds of vintage
stations from across the country.

The event is anchored by a "tall ship" AM station in each time zone.
The East Coast and Central sections run
for 90 minutes in response to the tremendous participation in those
time zones. The remaining time zones
will be an hour. We encourage stations to check-in on AM using Collins
and other AM transmitters, new and
old. It's an opportunity to revel in this nostalgic mode, enjoy
giving vintage equipment a "run," and sharing
some storytelling about classic vacuum tube homebrew and commercial
designs. Typically more than a
hundred stations take part in the evening's coast-to-coast AM event;
by the time it concludes at 10:00 PM
Local PST.

LISTEN for the following anchors and stop by to say hello, won't you?
You don't have to be running Collins
or vintage gear to be welcomed into the group.

7:00 PM-8:30 PM Local East Coast Time Anchor: Bob W0YVA

7:30 PM-9:00 PM Local Central Time Anchor: Jim W0NKL and Brian K0EFJ

8:00 PM-9:00 PM Local Mountain Time Anchor: K0OJ Jim and Chuck KD0ZS

8:00 PM-9:00 PM Local West Coast Time Anchor: WA6FIZ Mickey

We are still looking for additional anchors in the West Coast time
zone. Please contact me if you are interested!

To all interested in the 20 meter net:

There will be a CCA net on 14.263 +/- QRM at the regular time.

There will 2 net controls on frequency.

This is not the "official" start of the rejuvenated net as we are still
working on training and operation docs and scheduling but we have a
wonderful and supportive group of volunteers ready to go. The official kick
off should be in 2 or 3 weeks, I hope.

In the mean time we will be filling in the NCO function one week at a time.
There will also be a small experiment today and we will be calling the net
in "Time Zone" order to see if this helps with propagation.

This will go like:

1s, 2s, 3s and then 4s

Followed by 5s, 8s and 9s

Followed by Zeros and 7s

Followed by 6s.

Come support the nets - The contesting should be over and I will see you
there.

John-
The anode rings can be rebuilt by silver soldering (brazing) new finger
stock to the old rings. Several years ago, I manufactured a few sets =
for
some group members, but if you have the old rings it would be much =
easier to
rebuild them. They will need to be replated, which is something I no =
longer
can do, however, many jewelers or plating companies can do it. The HV-1
fuse is available from Fuses Unlimited in California.

Well, No Joy today........There was still the contest going on and there was
an EA8ZS right on 14.262.9 that was very strong and active. I asked if he
was intending to stay there and that we had a net trying to come up on
frequency, but he said he was not going to move and it was his frequency, so
that was the end of that. S9 QRM anyway. The good news is I worked the
EA8.

So, folks.....same time, same station - next week and we will be there and
we will be a week closer to having a solid net every week.

I am very pleased at the enthusiasm that all have shown for re-invigorating
the 20 meter net, and thanks again for the supporting emails and special
thanks to all who have stepped up to volunteer for NCO duty. It is going to
happen as soon as I get a solid schedule.

See you next week and I hope all of you will show up and help make the
Sunday Net one that we can all enjoy every Sunday. If we all show up we can
get this going in no time.

Also, we spoke with the printer at the end of the week and the Q1 Signal
should be winging (or I guess, for you Round guys, rounding) it towards your
QTH as you read this. Oh, and for you esoteric guys that only do the
Rockwell stuff, that would be rocking along to you. Enjoy 12 pages -
stapled and a 4 page insert. Compliments of your new Board.

My Best Regards to you all,

A 651S1 just barely stumbled in to my shack. It needs help. I powered it up
and the display lights up the controls seem to work except no audio. I don't
have the manual so I am flying blind. There are some audio connections on
the rear panel. Do any of these need a jumper to enable the speaker ??

Thanks for taking the time.
Best Regards
Dave

Paul,

I did some research on the KWM-1 and its accessories a couple of years ago, and here's what I found:

The 399B-1 “DX Adapter” allowed split-frequency operation of the KWM-1. (An “export model,” differences unknown to me, was labeled the 399B-2.) The 399B-3 “Novice Adapter” provided crystal control of the KWM-1 transmitter section to comply with restrictions for Novice class licensees who wanted to use the KWM-1 15-meter CW operation in the 1950s.

There is substantial evidence to suggest that those accessories were developed, at least in part, to allow the military to use the KWM-1 in U2 spy planes, which had cockpits so cramped that the transceiver had to be mounted with the front-panel controls out of direct reach of the pilot.

By the way, while ham lore has it that the U2 piloted by Francis Gary Powers that was shot down over Russia carried a KWM-1, that doesn't seem to have been the case in fact. Powers' mission was a CIA operation, and the CIA was so concerned about secrecy when flying over enemy territory that it didn't equip its U2s with any long-range radio gear. However, Art Collins' good friend Gen. Curtis LeMay did have KWM-1s installed in some U2s operated by his Strategic Air Command. SAC used its U2s to sniff for Russian and Chinese nuclear tests -- but supposedly always in international air space.

73,

Mike, K0MYW

*Parts needed: *
Need the skirt around the tuning knob that fits the S-Line radios. A
complete knob would do if you don't want an arm and a leg for it... hi.
Also, need two silver inserts for knobs on the S-Line. Also, fits KWM2
knobs. These silver inserts are a little smaller than a dime. Or
again, two knobs are needed.

Also needed is a 500 kHz xtal. Prefer CR-18 case, but will consider
others. One with long wire leads would be best, but FT243 terms will
work too.

*Advice needed:*
Does anyone have the 1 pfd and 5 pfd, 400V "button caps" used for
interstage coupling in a 75A1 receiver? If so, would you measure the
capacitance from either lead to the metal mounting ring for me?

The ones I have show:
For 1 pfd, about 0.8 pfd from either lead to the metal ring. For the 5
pfd cap, about 4.8 pfd to the ring from either lead. (the 1 pfd
measures 1.2pfd and the 5pfd measures 5.2pfd between leads)
I'm curious about this. It seems to me that the signal coupling from
one stage to another would be "split" between the output lead and
ground. If the cap was not mounted on a grounded metal plate then all
would be fine..... it seems.
I believe that it is also considered to be a "feed through" cap. But
the capacitance to the feed through ring seems to be high in my mind.
Any help here?

Thanks to all for your help. Bob W5UQ

It should. It sounds like you may have a unit that was modified to
disable it. Modifications
like this were not unusual on commercial and military units and a
fair amount of these were
used by them.

Take a look at the wiring on the pot.
