From all the other KWM-2's that I have seen, and from my manual, that RCA plug should be a spare and marked as such. It is a neat looking accessory, with styling to complement the Collins gear. I don't have a manual for it. I found that the unit I have had never worked: it was miswired at the factory. The only time d.c. was applied to the crystal oscillator was when the slide switch on the back was set to "spot". Also, my unit has a 6BH6 tube installed, whereas the review in June 1964 CQ shows a 6AU6. I was unable to get any data from B+W, which took over the Waters line. Can anyone help? Also, Waters made an adapter for this unit which allowed crystal control of the S/Line transmitter and receiver. Does this info exist anywhere in Anchor-land? AF MARS seemed to have a good supply of Collins FRC-93 type stuff still available back in the 90s. I was in Army MARS and recall only getting offers of 8088 junk computers and crap like that. The only good stuff I recall was passed on by other members, obtained during the Golden Days of the MARS surplus program. As far as accountability, it used to be set up to be held for....3-5 years, then dropped from the accountability roster. After all, the intent was to get rid of the stuff. But you had to remain active during that period, otherwise all the equipment had to be turned back in (generally not pursued, though). Sometime within (I *think*) the last 10 or so years, the rules changed to keep everything issued as accountable until you left the program, at which time it must be turned back in. I had dropped out of the program due to lack of activity (on both sides) as well as the lax leadership in my area that had allowed some real nitwits into the program for the sake of numbers. When I left, the new rule was not yet in force as I recall. The only gear I ever got was a relatively decent R-390 passed on to me by an OT. Later the RF deck for a T-368 came my way that was probably from the program, but was obtained privately. A buddy was the state screener back in the 60s and has great stories about hauling 18-wheelers full of gear back home for the members, and filling the field behind his home with everything from generators to teletype machines, and members coming to pick up gear with dump trucks and so on. Those must've been the halcyon days of the MARS program. Hopefully someone who is still active and has first-hand knowledge can give more details. ~ Todd, KA1KAQ . One day, I walked into the MARS station at Wright-Patterson AFB (Dayton) and asked what they had for sign-out. I was taken into the large warehouse behind the station, just filled with goodies. I came out with one of the old WW-2 command sets, which I gutted and rebuilt as a 40-meter CW transmitter. It was a keyed oscillator, using a pair of 117L7s in push-pull. Worked like a charm. Still have the log of contacts made that summer on 40-CW. Can't remember what ever happened to that rig. Wish I still had it. Can't do that any more, I guess. Those must've been the halcyon days of the MARS program. Hopefully someone who is still active and has first-hand knowledge can give more details. ~ Todd, KA1KAQ . When I was at his house several years ago he had only a 51S-1 but apparently has others now. His main area of interest was audio and he had built several very beautiful vacuum tube amplifiers that I believe he made for others on special order. He lives on the hillside near the top of the Coastal Range with a Saratoga, CA mailing address. I can actually see his house from my front yard down in the flatlands. It's a big house painted white and somebody once told me that local pilots call it the "Saratoga Beacon" since it's so easy to spot from the air. I've not been in contact nor seen him for several years and he isn't in the local phone book though there are a couple of columns of small type of Kongs so it may be buried under a different first name. I don't find a likely phone number searching there. I used to have a phone number for him. At one time this was a valid e-mail address, as was the ieee one that you already have. don@kdk.cncdsl.com You can see if you get a response there. Here's a link to an article of his. It also has the ieee e-mail address. The actual problem you are facing is the high line voltage. Dale said he has that situation, and I do also. I have solved that problem with all my older vintage equipment by using an old filament transformer connected in a "bucking" connection to lower the line voltage to the 114 - 115 volt level which allows all the older equipment to operate at it's design voltages at all points in the circuit. I have used this approach with my KWS-1, 75A-4, 30L-1, and other older equipment. It's not just the HV, it's also the filament and all other voltages in the radio that are affected. High filament voltage will severly shorten a tube's life. Just another approach for you to consider. Have fun. 73, Bill, K5GCW ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Cc: "Collins List" ; Sent: Monday, March 31, 2008 1:49 PM Subject: {Collins} Re: 572-B for 30L-1 > Harold, > > Back when the 30L-1 was designed, the 811As were a good choice. All CCA Reflector readers,  this = broken link=20 is proving to be a thing or situation that has been building for some = time, it=20 is generally believed to have been started as a corruption point by an = AOL=20 user,  who had no clue it was eventually going to effect this = degree of=20 service...  it does not matter really how it started,  it was = not=20 intentional, but the bigger point, it has piled up a long list of what I = am=20 learning is called loop file miss-direct, every day I have thought would = be the=20 day this lost chain to the archives would be reestablished ,  not = just=20 yet,  but I do believe it is getting = closer..

what was that ole thing TV stations = used to=20 announce,  do not adjust ur set,  we are the problem,  = well our=20 providers are sorting out the cause, and we will see this thru to = getting=20 repaired,  it's just a giant PIA right now...

I will cheerfully report when this is=20 completed,  thank you and please continue using the reflector = .. =20 mac/mc  w5mc   CCA Board Member and reflector moderator = .. =20

For further clarification:

There appears to be something wrong with the listserve = itself. =20 Searching Google for other groups' archives, such as "boating" with = this link=20 http://www.google.com/search?hl=3Den&safe=3Doff&rls=3DGGLG%2C= GGLG%3A2007-52%2CGGLG%3Aen&q=3Dboating+site%3Amailman.listserve.com works=20 and clicking on the resultant Google search results works.

However, when doing the same via Google for "collins" http://www.google.com/search?hl=3Den&safe=3Doff&rls=3DGGLG%2C= GGLG%3A2007-52%2CGGLG%3Aen&q=3Dcollins+site%3Amailman.listserve.com there=20 are many search results but clicking on any link returns a 404 (Page = Not=20 Found) error.

Mac has been notified and I believe he has been working with the = folks at=20 Listserve to resolve the issue.

Brian

In the past you could visit the Collins reflector=20 archives. There the archives can be searched with a built in = search=20 engine. It's very handy when trying to get specific information on = Collins=20 radio. If you go to the Collins Collectors Association web page = you will=20 find a link to the above mentioned archives. If you click on it, = at least=20 from here, it will be a dead link. It's been that way for several=20 weeks.

Their description says something like.... " Fully Automatic Servo Motor type". That to me implies a motor driven Variac (???) which would work, but wouldn't be too fast. The old type Ferro-resonant transformers were quite effective regulators, but were terribly inefficient. As I remember, they would draw full line current even with light loads. While I'm not signing on to the religion of Gore-Bull warming, I wouldn't want to pay the electric bill for one of THOSE things. 73' Charlie k3ICH ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jeff Wayne" To: ; Sent: Tuesday, April 01, 2008 12:59 PM Subject: {Collins} Re: Powerbright line voltage stabilizer > The auto voltage stabilizer is a model SVC-2000. We may have to add coin boxes to our rigs to comply with the government requirements. These live voltage stabilizers are quite fast and if you take a hit on the line, such as a furnace starting up, you will hear a slight buzz that lasts a fraction of a second. The most dramatic motor noise takes place when powering up and powering down the stabilizer. My line voltage is somewhere between 121 and 122 VAC. It takes almost a second to go from dead off to an adjusted 115 VAC. The adjustments do not last long and depending on your house AC is not a nuisance. The bottom line is that the overwhelming majority of time that your equipment is connected to the stabilizer, your line voltage remains where you want it to be. So, overheating is minimized and your components are much happier. I have an old RCA line voltage monitor next to the rigs and that is plugged into the stabilizer. My unit is under the operating desk and it is difficult for me to see the voltmeter and ammeter, so I rely on the desk top meter. The unit has been reliable and once you have used it for a while, you will not be as prone to checking it all the time to make sure that it did not take off and run the voltage up to 240.
