Years ago the 664 was a popular microphone in show
business...
The 664 had a shiny case for sure.
Show business found that the shiny finish
conflicted with the stage lights etc..
Electro Voice put out another version of the
664 with a matte finish....non reflecting....I believe it was an anodized bronze
or similar shade. It also had a different model number which I seem to
remember as 665. This model was most used by stage productions, movie
makers and recording studios. They also had a number of other microphones
with that finish in their "professional" category.

Subject: {Collins} Help: Finish on an
EV664 Mic
I've picked up two EV664 mics. The cases
on both are scratched up. The first is the typical polished metal
finish. Can these scratches be buffed out or am I going quickly go
through a plating to some base metal--making things worse than they already
are?
The second mic is painted a dark bronze (it's got a gold
windscreen). Anyone ever try to remove the paint on these offshoots of
the 664? I am wondering, again, what's underneath. Is removing the
paint, with the intention of getting back to a regular polished metal 664,
just going to make things worse.
Thanks in advance for your wisdom and
experience.
