[NEohioPAL] Opera Cleveland seeks Music Director(s) for Education Programs 2008/2009



The Opera Cleveland Education Department is the education and community outreach wing of Opera Cleveland. Participatory projects and performance programs are designed to interest students of every age – preschool through senior adult. Established in 1977, the department presents more that 300 programs a year throughout the region. Programs and artists reach an average of 80,000 students and adults every year.

 

The Music Director position for an education project (or projects) requires both accompanist and vocal coaching skills. Candidates with graduate Education and/or Music degrees and teaching experience are preferred. Responsibilities include:

 

  • Active involvement with the audition and interview process for specific projects.
  • Vocal coaching of singers before rehearsals begin ( 2 – 4 sessions per singer)
  • Leading music rehearsals with cast before staging rehearsals begin.
  • Accompanying staging rehearsals.
  • Working collaboratively with Stage Director to help artists achieve excellence vocally and provide feedback as is appropriate.
  • With projects that require more than one accompanist Music Director prepares additional accompanists.
  • With projects that require contact with teachers regarding music needs, Music Director contacts teachers for each school via telephone or email for introduction and informational purposes.
  • Provide assistance (as needed) to teachers who request additional help with methodology of teaching music to students – provide ideas, problem solve, etc.
  • Meet with Project Coordinator to review schedules, discuss concerns and strategize details prior to rehearsals beginning.
  • Visit programs and provide feedback on methods for continuing to grow level of musicianship and improve pedagogy for participants and project staff.

 

The Music Director reports to the Director of Production and Education. Project runs vary by program from full time for 4 or more weeks to part time for 3 or more months. Project fees range depending on project. Project fees include travel and per diem.
