Position
Announcement School
Director/Professor, School Director,
Professor The
The The School of Dance, Theatre, and Arts Administration at
The University of Akron encourages undergraduate and graduate students to
explore and expand their educational and cultural horizons through
comprehensive investigations of art and life. At the undergraduate level, the B.A. curricula in dance and
theatre focus on technique and creative exploration within a broad liberal arts
context. The B.F.A. degree in dance prepares talented students for
professional careers in dance performance and choreography. The Modular Master Degree program in theatre, designed for
advanced students of theatre arts, is structured so that the program can be
completed in intensive five-week sessions over the course of three summers.
This program is particularly popular with teachers desiring to complete a
graduate degree in theatre without having to take leave from their jobs. The graduate program in arts administration is one of
approximately 25 programs across the country with a curriculum designed to
prepare students for successful careers in the business of not-for-profit arts. In 2006 the School moved into the new Center for Dance and
Theatre at Guzzetta Hall. This world-class facility features seven technology
enhanced dance studios, including The Francia Holliday Albrecht Dance
Performance Studio; administrative and faculty offices; scene and costume
shops; technology enhanced classrooms including a design lab/studio; and
training room, physiotherapy, and locker room facilities. The School is also in the developmental stages of phase two
of its building expansion that will include a new 450-seat theatre supporting
music, dance, and theatre performances and productions. The school’s four performance spaces, scene and
costume shops, and a design studio offer students the possibility to work on
their craft. Sandefur Theatre in Guzzetta Hall is a flexible black-box theatre
seating up to 125 patrons. Also in Guzzetta Hall is the Varian Theatre, a
black-box studio space for classes as well as the performance of experimental
plays and intimate work. In Kolbe Hall is the Paul A. Daum Theatre, a 250-seat
proscenium space. Adjacent to Guzzetta Hall is E.J. Thomas Performing Arts
Hall, the region’s flagship performance venue. More
