are Richard Dedeux, Amde Hamilton and Otis O’Solomon. These progenitors
of hip-hop came out of the Watts riots of 1965 as angry, disillusioned
teenagers, and were recruited by legendary screenwriter, Budd Schulberg (On the
Waterfront) as students for his Watts Writers Workshop. There they discovered
their strongest ally in their personal quest for justice —- literacy. For
the past 40 years, the Prophets have used their gift for expressive, poetic
language as the galvanizing tool that creates empowerment, pride and
responsibility in communities of young people around the world. In 1967, these
three, the best of the students in the prestigious Watts Writers Workshop, won
their first amateur talent contest as a nameless group. But then, after they
recited/chanted/ spoke/sung/witnessed their unique jazz-accompanied topical
poem, an audience member -- dazzled by their performance -- shouted, “They
must be the Watts Prophets!” "Hip-hop's going
from the top of the charts to the head of the class, even into Scholastic
children's books. Teachers are using it as a learning tool - sometimes on the
sly"-- Philadelphia Inquirer Please call
