[NEohioPAL] Youth Career Olympics -- Youth Opportunities Unlimited, April 23

Youth Opportunities Unlimited, Y.O.U., Northeast Ohio’s largest youth workforce development organization, will present their annual event, Youth Career Olympics, Wednesday, April 23, 8:45 a.m.–1:30 p.m. at DoubleTree Hotel, 6200 Quarry Lane, Independence. Students compete in business-focused events judged by community leaders. The Youth Career Olympics competition rewards students for applying career-based knowledge in a team setting.

Over 700 students received the training necessary to enter the competition, and about 150 high school juniors and seniors will compete in a number of categories. These students attend high schools in Cleveland, East Cleveland and Euclid. First prize winners in each category received a $100 prize, plus had a chance to win a $1,000 grand prize.

Highlights of the day will include a welcome by Y.O.U. Chairman Steve Mixter, Keynote Speaker, Andrew A. Venable, Jr., Director of the Cleveland Public Library, and Pamela Macer, Director of the Youth Career Olympics, who will conduct the recognition of student teams at the Awards Ceremony. Former CAVS great Campy Russell and CAVS mascot Moondog will participate in the day’s activities. The afternoon will conclude with a thank you and adjournment by Y.O.U. President, Carol Rivchun.

Companies sponsor, at various corporate levels, teams of students and coach them to success. Employees who want a volunteer experience do any or all of the following: coach their team before the day of the competition, judge an event, provide company materials or recruit students for jobs at the Opportunity Fair, participate as the audience in some events, and compete in the Corporate Team Challenge, side by side with the students. Youth Opportunities Unlimited develops and prepares youth for economic opportunities by connecting youth, schools and employers.
