Synopsis:
A good-natured switchboard
operator, working for her cousin's answering service, tries to improve the lives
of her clients by passing along bits of information she hears from other
clients. She falls in love with one of them even though she has never met
him.
Over the phone and under the
assumed identity of an old woman,
she helps him write a play.
Meanwhile, her cousin is dating a
bookie masquerading as a record distributor who uses her business as a front for
his illegal activity. To complicate matters, the police think the
answering service is a call girl operation, which leads to a madcap ending.
Songs made popular from this show
include Just in Time, The Party's Over and
I Met a
Girl.
In 1960 the play was made into a
movie starring Judy Holliday.
