Re: clothing/tool allowance

Title: Re: clothing/tool allowance
Hi Amie,

Interesting question...Yes, the exhibit department should have a tool allowance but your question seems to imply that the Preps are bringing their own tools to work. If I need to bring a personal tool in more than a couple times a year I would expect the museum to buy it’s own. Especially if it’s something that can wear out like a nail gun or electric hand tool. As a rule personal items should be left at home.

As for work clothing, in my experience, supplying ones own jeans and t-shirts are the norm. If clothes are wearing out at a great rate due to activities at work I would suggest that the museum provide Tyvek suits, aprons and smocks when necessary. Knee pads and gloves should be made available also. Some Exhibit Technicians are required to wear uniforms so that is certainly an option.

I’ll be interested to hear what other responses you get.

Dear List Members,

I would like to know how many preparators out there get some kind of annual personal work clothing and/or tool allowance, or get personal work clothing or tool purchases reimbursed by your institutions?  If so, for what kinds of items are you reimbursed, and what is your approximate spending limit?

Thank you,
