When we hire, we outfit each driver/installer with
a personal tool box with basic tools - I can mail/fax a list with $$ if you w
ould like. It is the responsibility of each driver to maintain the tools,
anything lost or stolen is their responsibility and personal cost. No clothing
allowance although we do supply monogrammed long sleeve shirts for winter and
short sleeve in the summer that are replaced annually and have to be worn by the
employees.
Same outline for cell phones, (no personal calls)
and drills. Basic maintainance we repair, negligence we do not.

Dear List
Members,
I would like to
know how many preparators out there get some kind of annual personal
work clothing and/or tool allowance, or get personal work clothing
or tool purchases reimbursed by your institutions? If so, for what
kinds of items are you reimbursed, and what is your approximate spending
limit?
Thank
you,
Amie

Hello Amie,
I use a few hardware stores and an art supply store
for local purchases. (tools ,paints, etc.) I am issued blanket purchase
order numbers that provide me with pre-determined allowances of a particular
amount each year. These amounts vary from store to store, and vary from year
to year. If I need other supplies for prep/ exhibit/ storage
work, from places like University Products, Light Impressions,
Conservation Resources, etc. I get an estimate from the company and then
run it by our director for approval. It then it goes to our purchasing
department and I am issued a P.O. number, which the vendor gets when I
place the order. I usually do not pay out of pocket for too many
items. On the very rare occasions that I do, I am usually reimbursed by
the college within 2 or 3 weeks. We are talking mostly gas/food/ expenses in
this case.
