RE: clothing/tool allowance

Title: Re: clothing/tool allowance

Hi Wendy …

I would be very interested in your list of tools for the trucks … I equip my drivers with complete toolboxes that I hope would cover any situation … and a kit of install hardware … but I always instruct the guys to examine the walls or surfaces prior to an install … and if they need different equipment to purchase it.  However as most of our work is done in Manhattan or CT … there is usually a hardware store nearby for emergencies.

Uniforms are a must … and provided by the company … t-shirts for summer, long sleeves and sweatshirts for the winter, black carpenter pants mandatory … we have a vendor for the pants out of Texas that is very reasonable.  BOOTS are a requirement – no tennis shoes.

We use NEXTEL walkie-talkies to eliminate the option of unauthorized personal calls … and if customer contact is needed … the driver beeps the office and we call.

My biggest problem is knives … it seems these are either eaten or equipped with a disappear mode … I provide one knife with a package of replacement blades free … the first replacement I charge $5 … after that … they are on their own.

When we hire, we outfit each driver/installer with a personal tool box with basic tools - I can mail/fax a list with $$ if you w ould like. It is the responsibility of each driver to maintain the tools, anything lost or stolen is their responsibility and personal cost. No clothing allowance although we do supply monogrammed long sleeve shirts for winter and short sleeve in the summer that are replaced annually and have to be worn by the employees.

Same outline for cell phones, (no personal calls) and drills. Basic maintainance we repair, negligence we do not.

Dear List Members,

I would like to know how many preparators out there get some kind of annual personal work clothing and/or tool allowance, or get personal work clothing or tool purchases reimbursed by your institutions?  If so, for what kinds of items are you reimbursed, and what is your approximate spending limit?

Thank you,

 Hello Amie,

I use a few hardware stores and an art supply store for local purchases. (tools ,paints, etc.) I  am issued blanket purchase order numbers that provide me with pre-determined allowances of a particular amount each year. These amounts vary from store to store, and vary from year to year. If I  need  other supplies  for prep/ exhibit/ storage work,  from places like University Products, Light Impressions, Conservation Resources, etc. I  get an estimate from the company and then run it by our director for approval. It then it goes to our purchasing  department and I am issued a P.O. number,  which the vendor gets when I place the order.  I usually do not pay out of pocket for too many items.  On the very rare occasions that I do, I am usually reimbursed by the college within 2 or 3 weeks. We are talking mostly gas/food/ expenses in this case.
