Here are a few numbers from the recent crating survey.  Even though crate specifications are missing there is a significant price gap between buying new and retrofitting.
 
Participant Group: Museums et al   (107 total responses)
Together 43 museums spent a total of
$633,300 on approximately 527 new crates*  
Of this group 29 museums spent a total of
$57,510 to retro-fit approximately 438 previously used crates**
 
*Of the 43 museums 12 reported spending $212,700 on new crates last year but did not provide the number of crates build or ordered.
 
**Of the 29 museums 9 spent a total of $20,000 to retro-fit crates but left the response to the number of crates reused last year blank or entered zero. 
 
(Out of the 107 museums 9 reported using 47 crates at no cost. )
