RE: preparators conference

Hi Bruce, Thanks for the excellent suggestions concerning a Museum
Preparators Conference. PACIN was founded on just such an ideal. It was
intended to provide a forum linking Registrars, Preparators, Art Movers,
Risk Managers and other Museum professionals, with a common interest in
improving art handling standards. The difficulty we have had since the
beginning is getting more museum Preps to become members of PACIN. (Are the
reasons financial? Museum employers won't back membership for their Preps?
Or the independent cuss "I don't join nothing!" excuse?) It seems that the
majority of our members are Registrars, Conservators and commercial art
movers, among others. For some reason many museum Preparators have remained
uninvolved. This is sad since PACIN was intended to provide them with a
forum. Periodically PACIN does hold sessions at AAM or pre-conference
seminars. But I would love to see a Preparators Conference. It could be held
independently or in conjunction with the annual AAM convention. However,
unless we can get a "critical mass" of Preparators involved with our
organization it is probably not going to happen. What do you think? Do you
have any ideas about how we can reach more Preparators? Are you willing to
become involved with PACIN? Perhaps to promote Preparator memberships? I am
sure I can speak for all of the PACIN Steering Committee members that any
help you can give us will be very welcome. Best regards, Bryan Cooke

Subject: preparators conference

Does anyone know of an annual " museum preparators conference" where those
of us who work in museums / college art galleries could gather for
presentations, lectures, demos, workshops and informal exchanges related to
the the preparatory aspects of museum work? The online pacinlist exchanges
are fine, as are place like the Campbell Center.
I had something different in mind, perhaps modeled on the PPFA (
professional picture frames association) trade shows. I would be
curious to know. Thanks. Bruce Bundock

 Bryan,
   Thanks for your reply.
I know a number of art handlers freelance and work on a contractual basis , which could possibly translate into a reluctance to join Pacin, but there are also those who work full time at one venue. Although preparators function mostly "behind the scenes," I like to think that museums would encourage continued training to strengthen their own infrastructure. I personally want to know how my colleagues go about designing their own preparation/installation strategies for exhibitions. An annual conference could provide a platform for the cross pollinization of ideas, addressing a number of topics as they relate to museum preparation, and we all would benefit. It would also strengthen the Pacin network.
I have some ideas. Will write again. Best Regards, Bruce Bundock
