Hi Mark, The way to deal with sticking glassine
is to wet it using distilled water. After repeated applications of water the Glassine
paper will disintegrate and can easily be removed. However, there may be a
marred surface where the glassine contacted the paint. In layman’s
terms; these sticking problems most often occur when artists are not adding
correct amounts of drying compounds to the paint they are mixing. The outer
layers of the paint dry, but the inner layers remain uncured because they are
sealed in by the dry surface paint and varnish. When a painting is sealed
in wrapping materials, the off-gassing solvents from the innermost layers are
trapped and begin softening the surface paint. This is why a painting that
appears totally dry to touch, and passes the sniff test, will still stick to
wrapping materials. It just happens that the RC List serve has several comments
today concerning the same problem. One Registrar suggested wrapping the
painting using silicon impregnated paper, which will not stick. However, if the
silicon paper contacts the surface, it may still cause damage by marring the
paint or by leaving a shiny spot. The best advice to avoid problems is to
collar paintings or hang them in travel frames. However, this is costly and
also increases the volume of the painting for shipping and storage. The
sticking problems may also happen with acrylic based paints subjected to warm
conditions. Best regards, From:
pacinlist-bounces@pacin.org [mailto:pacinlist-bounces@pacin.org] On Behalf Of Mark Starling HI all, I just received a call from an artist asking what we
use to remove glassine paper from and acrylic painting? Apparently he had wrapped a series of paintings in
Glassine and the paper has now adhered to the surface. He says the pieces were
dry when wrapped but the surface is very glossy. The paint used was a
commercial art store brand of acrylic paint. I told him we have never experienced that problem
however I would put it out to the list and see if anyone has encountered a
similar situation. PACART T: (416) 754-0000 PACART a proud member of ICEFAT |
