The Asian Art Museum of San Francisco offers an exciting opportunity for a skilled and resourceful individual to assist a dynamic team in the management of this magnificent and world-renowned collection.  The Assistant Registrar will perform a wide variety of professional registration duties related to the movement, storage, and documentation of the museums collection.  Working with curators, conservators, preparators, and other collections staff, the incumbent will also assist with registration activities related to exhibitions and loans. 

 

The ideal candidate will possess patience, persistence, flexibility, and a sense of humor.  He/she will have the ability to work as part of a team with a diverse staff, staff from other institutions, and private lenders.

 

Examples of Duties

 

4         Inputs new data in the collections database; updates and corrects existing data; performs retrospective data entry and data clean-up using information from label copy, recent museum publications, and other sources.

 

4         Maintains manual files containing documents and information relating to works of art in the collection and on loan.

 

4         Assists with logistical and shipping arrangements for loans and new acquisitions.

 

4         Assists with accessioning and physical processing of new acquisitions.

 

4         Assists with registration aspects of selected incoming and outgoing exhibitions and loans.

 

4         Works with Assistant Registrar for Photo Services and the Museum Photographer to arrange for art to be taken to the Photo Studio from art storage, the galleries, or conservation laboratory, and returned after photography.

 

4         Monitors the activities of visitors, such as packers, contractors, appraisers, and donors, in art storage.

 

4         Monitors relocations of objects within the museum.

 

4         Receives objects that are brought to the museum as loans or potential acquisitions; prepares incoming receipts and places objects in art storage.

 

4         Coordinates the preparation of the quarterly acquisitions committee meeting agenda.

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

·        Bachelor?s degree in Art, Art History, Museum Studies, Arts Administration, or closely related field from an accredited college or university.

 

·        Two (2) years of related experience in registration methods in an art museum or similar institution, or an equivalent combination of academic qualifications and work experience.

 

·        Knowledge of current registration practices and principles.

 

·        Knowledge of art handling techniques and preventive conservation methods.

 

·        Extremely accurate and detail-oriented.

 

·        Ability to lift and handle delicate and valuable works of art with extreme care.

 

·        Excellent computer skills: proficiency in Microsoft Office and experience with relational database management programs for museum collections. Experience using ARGUS Open Edition highly desirable.

 

·        Knowledge of digital camera equipment, software, the digitization process, and metadata is an advantage.

 

·        Strong interpersonal, planning, and organizational skills; excellent written and oral communication skills; effective problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.

 

·        Ability to work independently, with accuracy, and to handle numerous projects and deadlines simultaneously with discretion.

 

Compensation

 

$19.32-23.20/hr.* with generous benefits package
