CherokeeNationDistrict7 -- Cherokee Nation News & Events List by Cara Cowan Watts

About CherokeeNationDistrict7
English (USA)

Introduction:

This is an email news and events list for Cherokee Tribal Citizens managed by myself - Cara Cowan Watts, former Cherokee Nation Tribal Councilwoman.

I host and own the listserv so news and events are always available to Cherokee Nation citizens.

I do not have staff, an office or a budget for communication with Cherokee citizens. This email list is my personal solution for on-going and up-to-date communication with other Cherokee Tribal Citizens who want to stay up on tribal events and news.

The email list, computer, website, server and on-line newspaper subscriptions are paid for out of my personal budget and not provided by the tribe. To my knowledge, I am the only Councilperson or former Councilperson other than Dr. Julia Coates who maintains an email list for weekly (if not, daily) information to constituents. So, it is a work in progress and defined by our needs as a community and your feedback!

The purpose of this listserv is to communicate news about the Cherokee Nation, legislative activities that affect you as a tribal citizen, political activities and issues that affect you as a tribal citizen, Cherokee Nation scholarship news and other scholarship opportunities, job opportunities with Cherokee Nation entities, upcoming conferences, local and national events in Rogers County and the Cherokee Nation area, news about our members and other items that might help our on-line community develop.

Not all of the emails will apply to you or assist you with your needs, but we hope you can use some of the information and share with others what does not apply to you. I do try to make it easy to hit delete by creating accurate subject headings.

Does someone you know want to be added to the list?

If you know of someone who would like to be added, please have them email me directly with the email address of their choice as well as their name and city of residence. If so, please email me at .

About every 3 months or so, I will address list housekeeping to make sure everything is functioning as it should.

Please save this email for when you have questions about the listserv or want to ask someone you know History and Make-up of the Cherokee Nation Email List:

I started the email list during the 2003 campaign and quickly realized the need to continue the list for my constituents.

Since I took office in mid-August of 2003, the list has grown to more than 700 individuals or families who are interested in Rogers County and Tulsa County Cherokee News and Events.

The intent of District 14 Email List:

The original intent of the District 14 email list is to communicate full-time and internship job opportunities in the area, National and local opportunities (such as grants, scholarships, fellowships and more) for us as individual tribal citizens, scholarships, local and national community events, important Indian news, personal congratulations to community members and anything else that helps build our community in Rogers and Tulsa Counties. Sometimes, this will include requests for mentors, speakers or tutors for local Indian students. Rogers County Cherokee Association (RCCA), Tulsa Cherokee Community Organization (TCCO) and Victory Cherokee Organization of Collinsville event and meeting notices will be sent to the list whenever provided.

In other words, we are trying to build an on-line community to empower Rogers County and Tulsa County Cherokees. There are other Cherokee Tribal Citizens on the list who are not from Rogers or Tulsa County, because they support our community and want to know more about what is happening. We have many active Tribal Citizens who live in other states and hope to move home in the next few years. They ask great questions and provide a lot of support behind the scenes.

Email List Housekeeping:

If you ever need something posted to the email list, please send me an email at cara@caracowan.com. If I am able to post, I will let you know. Just try to keep the email short and concise, delete the forwarding (email headers from other folks) information unless that is the contact for the information, validate the accuracy/legitimacy of the email if possible and put the sole contact for the opportunity with their full contact info on the email.

If you want removed from the list or would like someone to be added, email .

If you change email addresses, please let me know ASAP. We have been getting some errors from people bouncing, lately.

If you realize you have not been getting emails from me and want to make sure you are still on the list, please email me a short note at cara@caracowan.com. I will get back with you as soon as possible.

When I am in meetings or on travel, I am not able to check emails. So, there will be days and sometimes a week at a time when I am unavailable by email.

Notes from Cara:

Thank you very much for your time.

Please let me know if I need to include other information on this email or if it was not helpful or helpful... I am trying to provide a service and it is not always clear how I should do this for every individual who has unique needs.

Although my personal website, http://www.caracowan.com, is not updated very often, I will continue to maintain the site throughout my term and provide pictures of events and projects whenever my time permits.
