Two reasons:

1) It is safer.  Some fault conditions put you and the equipment at danger 
without the separate safety ground wire/connection.

2) The electric code requires it (now).  It is conceivable that your 
insurance company won't pay for replacing your house or shack if:

  a) it burns down
  b) an investigation reveals your installation did not comply with current 

(There will no doubt be additional opinions.)
