Haven't tried it but someone recommended to heat a non-stainless steel screw
red hot to anneal it some and then after cooling it down use 'gun blue"
which will actually turn it a nice back oxide color.

Some very well stocked hardware stores have at least a #5 machine screw.
Not Home Depot, Lowe's, etc.  If you can't find a black oxide one, often if
you heat the machine screw with a propane torch it will turn black.
