- Thread-topic: {Collins} 30L-1 --- soft start and power supply * realy Bd
Good evening, John.
Ref. question 1: You confusing a "soft start" with a "soft key". The "soft start" powers up the power supply gradually over a few hundred milliseconds, allowing the capacitors in the power supply to charge up with a lesser current surge. General consensus seems to be that this isn't needed with the 30L-1, and anyway the type of exciter you use has no bearing on it. The "soft key" converts the keying voltage, typically around -170V in the 30L-1, into something that newer rigs can handle without blowing up, typically +12 volts or so. That is absolutely necessary in order to use the 30L-1 with most modern "rice box" rigs, probably including the FT-2000D.
Ref. question 2: I have a 30L-1 in which I replaced the original power supply board with Young Kim's design, and it works fine. Since then, Don, K4LAJ in Florida, has begun producing a 30L-1 replacement power supply board at a significantly lower price. I have one if his boards in my other 30L-1 and it works perfectly.

I have a 30L-1 due in this week ... it is supposedly low usage (2 owners)
and "original" ...
Questions please ...
1. some have said a soft start is necessary in order to use with my Yaesu
FT-2000D ?
2. anyone dealt with or know of Young Kim - K6HM - a CA power supply
engineer who has
designed and sells complete Power Supply and Relay Board upgrades?
His units are
complete in that they are not "kits."
I realize there are several updates/mods that I may elect to perform (or
maybe not HI) but these two items seem to be high on the list.
Your comments will be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
John
